Sustainable development has become a buzzword in recent years, but what does it really mean? At its core, sustainable development is about creating a better future for everyone, while preserving the planet's natural resources for generations to come. As we attempt to understand what sustainable development is and why it's important, it’s imperative we think of how we can achieve it.
What is Sustainable Development?
According to the United Nations, sustainable development is defined as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." It's about creating economic, social, and environmental conditions that enable people to live healthy, productive lives, without causing irreparable harm to the planet.
Why is Sustainable Development Important?
Sustainable development is important for several reasons. Firstly, it's critical for ensuring that future generations have access to the resources they need to thrive. According to the World Wildlife Fund, we are currently using 1.6 times the amount of resources that the planet can sustainably produce. Secondly, sustainable development can help to reduce poverty and inequality by creating jobs, promoting economic growth, and improving access to basic services like healthcare and education. The International Labour Organization estimates that transitioning to a low-carbon economy could create up to 24 million new jobs globally by 2030. Finally, sustainable development is essential for mitigating the impacts of climate change, preserving biodiversity, and protecting the planet's natural resources. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warns that we have only a decade left to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, beyond which the risks of extreme weather events, sea level rise, and food insecurity become much more severe.

How Can We Achieve Sustainable Development?
There are several key steps that need to be taken in order to achieve sustainable development. Firstly, we need to adopt sustainable production and consumption patterns, which involves reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, conserving water and other natural resources, and promoting more sustainable forms of agriculture and forestry. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, transitioning to a circular economy could lead to a reduction of up to 99% in virgin material consumption in some sectors. Secondly, we need to invest in sustainable infrastructure, such as renewable energy, public transportation, and sustainable buildings. The International Energy Agency estimates that renewable energy will make up 90% of the world's electricity generation growth by 2025. Thirdly, we need to promote sustainable communities, which involves building social capital, fostering community engagement, and promoting social inclusion. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development reports that social capital can increase economic growth by up to 0.5% per year.
By taking these steps, we can create a more sustainable future for ourselves and for future generations. However, achieving sustainable development will require cooperation and collaboration across all sectors of society, from governments and businesses to civil society organizations and individuals.
